This study investigated the effects of plyometric training performed with and without ankle loads (2.5 % of body mass) in elite junior soccer players over 10 weeks.
The results showed that the ankle-loaded group achieved greater improvements in sprint performance, repeated change-of-direction ability, balance, vertical jump height, and maximal aerobic power compared to the unloaded group.
A possible explanation is that the additional load increased neuromuscular activation and training stimulus, leading to enhanced performance adaptations.

This review examined how adding ankle weights influences exercise intensity, metabolic cost, and neuromuscular activation during walking and running.
Findings indicated that ankle loading significantly increases energy expenditure and muscle activation, particularly at higher gait speeds.
These effects suggest that ankle weights can be used to improve muscular endurance and cardiovascular load during dynamic exercise.
